Effective De-contamination of Engine Oil

Diesel engines for CHP installations, construction equipment, power generation and marine engines are often subjected to extreme loads.

Great demands are made on the lubricating properties of their engine oil, but these properties degrade over time.

Used engine oil contains insoluable solid contaminants, such as soot particles from combustion, metallic particles resulting from abrasion between engine components and dust from the environment.

The rate of build-up of contaminants is affected both by engine design (material properties and finishes) and operating conditions; an engine will produce more soot under heavy load than under a light load.

These contaminants increase the viscosity of the oil and reduce its ability to form an effective barrier between tightly toleranced components. The amount of solid foreign matter is therefore one of the main criteria for the oil change and the determination of the oil change intervals.

A normal oil filter only traps particles larger than around 35 microns diameter. The most damaging particles, however, are about 3-5 microns in diameter and can pass straight through conventional oil filters.

A HUEGLI TECH Spin Clean unit can filter particles as small as 1 micron diameter, drastically reducing the dangerous particulate contamination and allowing the oil to retain its lubricating properties for much longer.

The Spin Clean filter is, effectively, a 1000g centrifuge that catches the heavy particles thrown to the outer face of its spinning drum and allows the lighter oil to drop to the base and flow back to the sump.

By allowing every single litre of lubricating oil to remain effective for longer, the Spin Clean allows the oil change interval to be significantly and safely extended. This provides savings in service costs, downtime, the oil itself and the cost and inconvenience of waste oil disposal.
